Operational Risk Without the Math

A Practical Course in Loss Events, Controls, and Resilience for Securities and Investment Operations

💡
Training Course | Foundational | 12 Lessons | 265 Pages | 24 Figures | 36 Tables

Operational risk is the risk that the work itself goes wrong: a payment released to the wrong account, a deployment that trades on its own, an election that misses its deadline, a vendor that stops answering. Every operations manager now owns a piece of the framework built to manage it, and most were handed that piece without a quantitative background.

This course teaches the framework in the order a practitioner meets it: the vocabulary, the self-assessment, controls and how to test them, loss events and near misses, indicators, scenario analysis, the capital number read without the formula, technology and third-party risk, fraud, resilience, and the reporting that carries a desk's risk to the board. Nothing in it needs more than arithmetic and a few descriptive statistics, and every calculation is worked in a table the reader can check by hand.

Written at the Foundational level for operations and change managers, first-line risk coordinators, and the second-line staff beside them, at broker-dealers, investment managers, custodian banks, fund administrators, wealth managers, and market infrastructure providers. Twelve lessons follow one composite firm, Alder Point Financial Group, under the US, UK, and EU rules; ten real cases are cited to court opinions, enforcement orders, and final notices; every job aid is a table built to be photocopied. A final integrated case and an optional thirty-question examination close the course.
