October 2026 edition

The UK, the EU and Switzerland move to T+1 on October 11, 2027, but the dates that decide readiness fall in December 2026: the amended EU settlement discipline standards apply from December 7 with a flat 23:00 CET allocation deadline, and the UK Code's seventeen end-2026 actions fall due December 31. The market gets 2027 for five coordinated testing windows and a double settlement day.

The European T+1 Countdown is an implementation checklist for the twelve months in between: fifteen workstreams from the three-regime map and the December gates through SSIs, instruction, partials and the gating event, clearing, funding and FX, lending, corporate actions, funds and ETFs, to the test windows and the migration weekend. Every item is one verifiable action with its failure mode, its evidence and its test.

Sample Items

09-02  Notify the lending agent or intermediary of every sale of a lent security as soon as possible after execution (UK SFT 04; EU SF-03), from the trade capture event rather than from the end-of-day position file, so that the recall can be issued inside the market's recall cutoff.

Watch out. Where the sale notification is the overnight position file, the agent learns of the sale after the recall cutoff on trade date has passed. Send the notification from capture, per execution, and measure the interval between execution and the agent's acknowledgment.

02-07  Publish to clients the firm's own allocation, confirmation and instruction cutoff ladder for European flow, with the regulatory gate each cutoff protects stated separately from the firm's own cutoff, and automate the receipt confirmation inside the two-hour window.

Watch out. A cutoff set to protect the firm's internal batch (say 20:00 CET) and published as "the regulatory deadline" invites the client to miss it and dispute it. Label the firm's cutoff and the gate it protects as two different times, and explain the gap.

04-08  Obtain from each prime broker its European T+1 cutoff ladder, its Power of Attorney and hold-and-release arrangements at each CSD, its CSDR penalty pass-through terms and the statement format behind them, and its readiness date.

Watch out. Where the prime brokerage agreement passes CSDR penalties through to the fund as a net debit, the fund cannot attribute a penalty to a cause, a trade or a counterparty, and the fails-reduction work has nothing to act on. Ask for the gross penalty statement per CSD with the trade reference on each line.
